Chapter 10

I manage to sleep a few hours before waking up next to a drool puddle on May’s chest. She shifts underneath me, and I sit up slowly, allowing her to turn on her side. I rub my eyes and wince at how irritated they feel.

“You really are a zombie,” May mumbles into a pillow. She yawns and stretches out her arms.

“I’m sorry. You can keep sleeping.” I watch as May blinks her eyes a couple of times and looks around the room.

“At least the sun is out. I don’t need sleep anyway.” She smiles at me and gives me a good morning kiss.

“Everyone needs sleep,” I say and kiss her back.

“Apparently you don’t.” May pulls me down on the bed, and we face each. She rubs her thumb along the corner of one of my eyes and offers me a small smile.

“Get some more rest. I’m going downstairs to check on my mom.” I plant a kiss on May’s forehead and walk out of the room, closing the door behind me. The house is pretty cold, so I turn up the thermostat and look outside. Even though it’s early the clouds are bunched together in a light flurry.

I go to the kitchen and splash some cold water over my eyes and face. It wakes me up enough to hear my mother talking in the other room. I walk down the hall and open her bedroom door quietly. She’s still lying down and her blankets are twisted in a bunch at the bottom of her bed. I walk over to her slowly and gently touch her shoulder. She jumps at the contact and turns to me, her eyes wild.

“Autumn, you scared me,” she says, putting a hand to her chest. I smile slightly because my name came to her lips immediately, but she looks like she had a rough night.

“Are you okay?” I ask her, putting the back of my hand to her forehead. She feels pretty warm, and I can tell by the tissues lying around her nightstand that she’s probably getting sick.

“I’m fine,” she says and purses her lips into a straight line. I look around the bed. There’s no phone or any device used to verbally communicate.

“Who were you talking to?” My mother looks away from me and pulls at the blankets.

“No one,” she whispers. I grab the blankets off the bed and throw them on the floor. They need to be washed anyway and so do the sheets. Before my mother opens her mouth to protest I put a finger over her lips.

“You’re getting a fever. You need to go upstairs and take a hot shower. I’ll change your bedding.” My voice is full of authority, and she doesn’t question my commands. I watch as she drags herself out of the bed and through the door. Her sheets haven’t been cleaned in a while, and I feel a little bad for not thinking to wash them before.

When she comes out of the shower I make up the couch with some clean linen and a wool blanket.
